Therapy is the avenue in which we can discover the beauty of community.
At the heart of depression is a lack of motivation or desire to connect, whether that be with our hobbies, friends, or the responsibilties of our lives. Depression feeds us the lie that we are better off alone and that we don't have the strength to face the day.
My approach to depression begins with affirmation and validation. I don't aim to start by whisking away your burdens, but rather legitmizing your battle. Depression is real, it is strong, and it takes no prisoners. However, you don't have to face it alone.
Through collaboration and reflection, we can start with small steps. At first we may just talk through the struggle, then we may begin to introduce habits and practices that keep that voice of isolation at a quieter volume. All the while we are cultivating a relationship that can restore the belief that a life alongside others is better than life alone.
The beauty of golf therapy is its natural adaptability to depression-focused therapy. I once heard, "movement is medicine," and I believe that phrase provides clear connection to golf's use in cultivating motivation and hope in our lives.
